EXT. BILLIE JEAN KING NATIONAL TENNIS CENTER – 14 DAYS

776,120 attendees. Countless stiff necks.

The 2022 US Open was one for the books. No longer forced to mask up and hunker down, fans felt liberated by the opportunity to feel the collective hum of grunts and groans.

But this wasn’t like prior tournaments. The buzz was addictive, a giddiness rooted in and rising from a forgotten place. Crowds felt an achingly sweet, long-delayed release. It didn’t matter who won. After months and months of social isolation, everyone was simply relieved to be together.

I wanted to tap into this collective emotional state, this energy that superseded spectatorship. Most importantly, I wanted to brag to my tennis coach. God did that feel good.
